Dr Dianne McCarthy has been made a Distinguished Trustee of the Malaghan Institute, a lifelong award recognising her service for and enduring relationship with the institute.

Appointed as a trustee in 2015 and most recently Chair of the Advocacy Committee, Dr McCarthy retired in early 2024. Malaghan Institute Chair Sir Paul Collins says the Trust Board unanimously supported her appointment as Distinguished Trustee.
“Di has been tireless in her advocacy for the institute's work and its scientists. This is by no means a farewell to Di as I have no doubt she will continue to be a strong advocate for the Malaghan.”
Chief Executive of the Royal Society of New Zealand from 2007–2014, Dr McCarthy brought more than 25 years’ experience in senior management and governance roles in the tertiary education, science and health sectors to her Trust Board role at the Malaghan Institute
She was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to education in 2008, a Companion of the Royal Society of New Zealand for services to science in 2015, and a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to science, business and women in 2016.
Dr McCarthy says she is delighted and deeply honoured to receive such recognition.
“I intend to keep very connected with the Malaghan Institute and do everything I can to promote and assist it in its important work.”
