Technical Support

Technical specialists play a vital role in driving and supporting the Malaghan’s research and innovation. Their expertise underpins experimental design, technology application, data generation, quality assurance and the stewardship of research capability.

At the Malaghan Institute, technicians are defined as technical specialists whose expertise enables and advances our research. This includes scientists engaged in laboratory research and our research platforms.

Technical specialists are scientists whose roles involve direct contribution to experimental design, data generation, methodological development and research quality. Some are embedded within research groups, while others provide specialist capability that supports multiple research teams across the Institute.

Technical specialists are distinguished from Science Support by their scientific training and the nature of their contribution to research. Their roles require advanced scientific judgement and hands-on expertise that directly shapes experimental approaches, research quality and innovation outcomes.

The Malaghan Institute’s commitment to technicians

While all our staff play an important role in harnessing the power of the immune system to save lives, technical specialists are specifically recognised for their direct and ongoing contribution to the design, execution and advancement of scientific research.

The Malaghan is one of the inaugural signatories of the Technician Commitment, a global university and research institution initiative hosted by the UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy. We’re committed to strengthening visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technical specialists.
