Joseph Tyro

Joseph Tyro is an Indigenous Māori leader with extensive experience across iwi, health, social services, community development and governance, driven by a lifelong commitment to whānau and community wellbeing.

Inspired by supporting his grandmother through her cancer journey as a child, Joseph began his career as a youth worker before progressing through social work, allied health, community and clinical leadership, academia, senior executive leadership and governance.

Today, Joseph serves in iwi and hapū leadership as chair of Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke and as a director of Te Mataapuna Hauora Ltd, the health arm of four collective hapū, championing Māori-led approaches and Indigenous wellbeing. He also contributes to a range of organisations locally, nationally and internationally through governance, strategic leadership, cultural development and advisory roles.
