With New Zealand now part of Horizon Europe, our scientists can work alongside European collaborators as equal partners and access the same funding opportunities. The Malaghan’s strengths in immunology and clinical translation mean we are well positioned to contribute to bold, collaborative research proposals.
Cutting-edge immunology research
The Malaghan Institute is New Zealand’s world-class independent biomedical research charity.
Based in Wellington, our research is advancing understanding of the immune system and its relationship to human health. By bringing together world-class immunological research and technologies with clinical expertise, we are uniquely positioned to translate new discoveries into new therapies to prevent, treat and cure disease.
While independent, we have close collaborative relationships with tertiary institutions, public research organisations, hospitals and clinics throughout New Zealand and leading research institutes around the world.

Our research strengths
- Cancer. We’re focused on finding ways to assist or train the immune system to better recognise and target different forms of cancer. We also research the underlying biology of cancer to find better treatment options.
- Allergic & inflammatory disease. We’re researching the underlying genetic and environmental factors that lead to allergic and inflammatory diseases to find new ways to target and treat these debilitating conditions.
- Infectious disease. We’re investigating the role of the immune system in fighting infectious diseases to develop more effective, longer-lasting treatments and preventions.

Supporting your research
The Malaghan Institute hosts several research technology platforms and services. These are available to anyone collaborating with the Malaghan Institute and other researchers working in these areas.
