Te Urungi: the steering paddle of the waka which supports the work of the kaihoe by guiding the course.

Te Urungi Māori is an independent advisory board of Māori leaders with expertise in health research and community perspectives. It provides strategic advice to the Malaghan Institute to support equitable health outcomes for Māori arising from its research and clinical activity.

Guided by Vision Mātauranga and Māori health advancement, Te Urungi ensures that research conducted within the institute upholds the mana of Māori communities, safeguards cultural safety for participants, protects taonga, and contributes to equitable health outcomes.

Te Urungi operates without payment or direct financial or commercial benefit, ensuring the independence of its advice and any endorsements. It may endorse approaches assessed as consistent with Māori interests and provides guidance on the application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and Vision Mātauranga.
