Malaghan Institute technology head making international strides in advancement of cytometry

31 May 2018

In a New Zealand first, Hugh Green Flow Cytometry Fellow and head of research technology at the Malaghan Institute Kylie Price, has become the first Kiwi to be elected to the International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry council, marking an important milestone for the development of this cutting-edge technology platform in the country.

Kylie, who has already served several years on the Australasian Cytometry Society council - two of which as president - has long been an advocate and supporter of the use of cytometry in research and the benefits it can bring to not only the Malaghan Institute, but the wider New Zealand community.

Cytometry, the quantitative analysis of cells and cell systems, allows researchers to study cells in far greater detail than other technologies. Kylie, who has worked with the technology for over 13 years, has been credited with pioneering the use of multicolour flow cytometry in New Zealand. She has also been instrumental in acquiring several Cytek spectral cytometers to the Malaghan Institute, thanks to support from the Hugh Green Foundation. These spectral cytometers - among the first of their kind in the southern hemisphere - signal another new leap forward for this technology in New Zealand and the Malaghan Institute.

As part of the ISAC council, Kylie will be able to work within the council to further strengthen the ISAC’s Shared Research Laboratories (SRL) program, it's global scientific reach and expand the availability of online and live cytometry education. Her appointment also solidifies the Malaghan Institute's commitment in using cutting-edge technologies to conduct internationally-impactful and ground-breaking biomedical research for the betterment of New Zealanders.
