The mission of the Malaghan Institute includes an active commitment to education. We wish to foster the development of new scientists and to expose students to the most recent advances in immunology and related topics. To that end, we actively sponsor programmes for doctoral candidates and also provide special opportunities for selected students earlier in their academic training.
In memory of her late husband, Betty Coker established the Rex & Betty Coker Scholarship to support a PhD student at the Malaghan Institute. The scholarship was offered for the first time in 2001 to Nicholas van Panhuys and is currently held by Marina Harvie. Marina is a PhD student within the Asthma Research Group and is studying the timing and tissue distribution of allergen-specific Th2 cells. This will allow us to better understand the physiological significance of these cells and the effects they have on the immune system in regard to asthma and allergic disease.
