The Friends of the Malaghan Institute are groups of dynamic and energetic volunteers who organise fundraising events to build awareness, gain support and raise funds at a national level. Their support is crucial to allowing the Malaghan Institute to maintain its unique position as an independent facility.
The first Friends group was established in Wellington in 1987. This was later followed by the formation of groups in Auckland and the Hawkes Bay, and, most recently, Queenstown in 2002.
Their most successful fundraisers are the annual golf tournaments, held in Auckland, the Hawkes Bay and Wellington, which raise a combined income of over $100,000!! Other fundraising events have varied from movie premieres, to functions at Government House, to sailing on the Spirit of Adventure during the Americas Cup!
The longest running annual event is the Lollipop Street Day Appeal organised by the Wellington Friends in conjunction with the Fundraising and Communications Team at the Institute. This event has grown over the years, from $14,000 raised in 1998, to a staggering $57,000 in 2004 when it was expanded to the greater Wellington region and Taranaki.
