Support a PhD Student

The Malaghan Institute welcomes support in its endeavors to developing New Zealand’s top scientists of tomorrow. You can help by sponsoring a student through the formation of a PhD Scholarship.

For New Zealand to remain at the forefront of scientific research we will need a continuous flow of new, well-trained scientists working in the laboratory. For this reason, the mission of the Malaghan Institute has always included an active commitment to education.

Suggested Sponsorship price: a minimum of $20,000 per annum for 3 to 5 years. Options for recognition, such as Scholarship naming rights, will be discussed upon application.

Current sponsored Scholarships:

Rex and Betty Coker Scholarship

In memory of her late husband, Betty Coker established the Rex & Betty Coker Scholarship to support a PhD student at the Malaghan Institute. The scholarship was offered for the first time in 2001 to Nicholas van Panhuys and is currently held by Marina Harvie.  Marina is a PhD student within the Asthma Research Group and is studying the timing and tissue distribution of allergen-specific Th2 cells.  This will allow us to better understand the physiological significance of these cells and the effects they have on the immune system in regard to asthma and allergic disease.
