How we are funded
As an independent organisation, the Malaghan Institute is reliant on contestable grants, donations and sponsorship for funding. Our independent status gives us freedom to follow the most promising course of research without bureaucratic restraints and political influence, ensuring optimal results and efficiency in bettering health in New Zealand.
Our scientists are committed to studying cancer, asthma, MS, arthritis and infectious diseases. Every day, we are a step closer to understanding and finding a cure for these tragic diseases that affect so many of us. So many people rely on our research, and just as they depend on us, we rely on the community and businesses to support our vision of a healthier New Zealand.

Bequests
The Institute is very dependent on bequests. We have developed an endowment fund that will grow from major gifts and bequests which will sustain the on-going operations and future of the Institute.
Donations
The Malaghan Institute is constantly in need of additional funding to cover the shortfall in the costs of the research programmes every year. Understanding what causes disease requires time, talent and dedication from our scientists and financial support from the community. Together, our efforts will result in improved health for future generations, and will bring social and economic benefits to New Zealand.
